It is similar to ‘Compactus’, but somewhat hardier, with mahogany-red tones in the summer foliage and brilliant fire-red fall color. Chicago Fire Burning Bush Euonymus appears earlier than other cultivars with abundant, long-lasting red fruits that open to show small orange seeds.
Its corky wings on stems add winter interest. Chicago Fire is useful as a screen, specimen, accent, or hedge.
It is an adaptable shrub which tolerates a wide range of soils and full shade, but will not tolerate wet, poorly-drained soil. Since it has a strong, branching growth habit it can withstand heavy pruning. Grows to 6 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Zones 4-8.
